Despite this, people seem to think they are pretty funny. Their fourth book of poetry, *No Town Called We* (Talonbooks, 2023) was long listed for both the Raymond Souster and the Pat Lowther Memorial Awards. *Max. 150 words:* **NIKKI REIMER** (pronouns she/they), poet and interdisciplinary artist, works at the intersections of the analog and the digital, challenging conventional responses to bodies, death, and capital. Their fourth book of poetry, *No Town Called We*, was published by Talon Books in fall 2023\. GRIEFWAVE.com, a multimedia, web-based, extended elegy, was launched in February 2022\. She is currently exploring technocultural death discourse while working towards an MA in communication and media studies. A fifth-generation white prairie settler of Ukrainian and Russian Mennonite descent, Reimer currently lives on the occupied lands of the peoples of the Treaty 7 region of southern Alberta. Though their practice began in the literary arts, Reimer’s artistic work has taken turns into multiple forms of interdisciplinary artmaking, including visual art and video, installation work, and performance practice. Reimer’s work has been extensively reviewed, often noting their embrace of dark humour and feminist refusal. --- ## Chris Reimer Legacy Fund Society Reimer is one of the founding co-directors of the [**Chris Reimer Legacy Fund Society**](https://www.cjjrlegacyfund.com/?ref=reimerwrites.com), an Alberta registered charitable society that funds the [Chris Reimer Legacy Award at the Mount Royal University Conservatory](https://www.mtroyal.ca/ProgramsCourses/FacultiesSchoolsCentres/TheConservatory/%5Fpages/scholarship-bursaries.htm?ref=reimerwrites.com) and contributes to dance bursaries for boys from marginalized backgrounds at [Decidedly Jazz Danceworks](https://www.decidedlyjazz.com/?ref=reimerwrites.com). Punching through the veils of complacency and greed that shape the cultures of the petrostate, these poems are meditations on an emergency, dispatches from wombat burrows and prairie hospitals. They consider the variegated forms grief can take, both marking and resisting their own decay. *Long-listed 2024 Pat Lowther Memorial Award* *Long-listed 2024 Raymond Souster Award* Listed on CBC Books’s “[34 Canadian poetry collections to watch for in fall 2023](https://www.cbc.ca/books/34-canadian-poetry-collections-to-watch-for-in-fall-2023-1.6936567?ref=reimerwrites.com)” [Purchase](https://talonbooks.com/books/?no-town-called-we&ref=reimerwrites.com) > **intense and witty, sweet and sullen, calm and spontaneous … Reimer says what we all wish we could and what we all wish we had** > – THIS Magazine --- ## My Heart is a Rose Manhattan ### Talonbooks, 2019 *My Heart is a Rose Manhattan* is a darkly humorous book about grief and isolation. The poems are cutting yet tender; sorrowful yet filled with righteous anger, absurdist at times but still recognizable, reassuring us that “it’s ok to grieve forever.” There is death and loss, architecture, alcohol, horse statues, and catalogues of life away from the urban centres of Canada. This book wants to “subvert the literary industrial complex,” but also crash in like the Kool-Aid meme with all-caps non sequiturs and “overdrawn affluenza.” These poems are addicted to social media and simultaneously well versed in feminist theory. Some of the poems rail against the abuses of rape culture, asking: What is excusable? Who is implicated? Who is believed? A natural translator, Reimer writes for anyone who has felt overwhelmed by the phrase “never read the comments.” Reimer has read all of the comments; paying close attention to musicality and her own poetic process, she guides found text into whiplike stanzas with original typos intact. Conscious of its birthplace, DOWNVERSE crafts both an ode to and an elegy for Vancouver’s middle-class, Gen-Y, millennial angst, and even Vancouver itself – not the physical place, but rather the idea of #Vancouver, presented through images plastered over billboards and stamped into Special Edition footwear. In its shifty way, Reimer’s text alternates between the voices of Vancouver’s youth- and consumer-driven populace, asking the question, “What happens when The Market is the Way, the Truth, and the Life?” [Purchase](https://talonbooks.com/books/?downverse&ref=reimerwrites.com) > **humorous and sharply critical. But she had a fall while she was there, which led to a doctor’s visit, a series of tests and eventually a diagnosis of ALS. Because she couldn’t travel anymore, she never made it back to her home of eighteen years. That left it up to my mom and my uncle to fly out west to clear out her belongings. Be it the meditation on the loss of a beloved dog who once solaced a departed parent, the tragic suicide of a stranger or the deep pain of losing a brother, *Locations of Grief* is defined by its range of essays exploring all the facets of mourning, and how the places in our lives can be irreversibly changed by the lingering presence of death. *Edited by Catherine Owen.* **Contributors**: Katherine Bitney, Alice Burdick, Jenna Butler, Marilyn Dumont, Ben Gallagher, Jane Eaton Hamilton, Catherine Graham, Catherine Greenwood, Richard Harrison, David Haskins, Steven Heighton, Theresa Kishkan, Christine Lowther, Canisia Lubrin, Alice Major, Catherine Owen, James Picard, Nikki Reimer, Waubgeshig Rice, Lisa Richter, Lynn Tait, Sharon Thesen, Onjana Yawnghwe and Daniel Zomparelli. These pieces are incisive and articulate, avoiding the usual platitudes, feel-good bromides, and pep talks associated with near-death encounters. The writing moves past the sob story and confronts the tough circumstance of facing death with truth and compassion, no matter how ugly or (in)convenient. *Edited by Elee Kraljii Gardiner.* **Contributors**: Adrian M. Co-edited by Rosanna Deerchild, Ariel Gordon, and Tanis MacDonald, *GUSH* offers menstrual manifestos for our time that question the cultural value and social language of monthly blood loss, with rage, humour, ferocity, and grief, and propose that the ‘menstrual moment’ is as individualized, subjective, personal, political, and vital as the ‘feminist click’. With work from emerging and established writers in poetry, cartoons, flash fiction, personal essays, lyric confessions, and experimental forms, this anthology features the voices of Indigenous writers, writers of colour, writers with disabilities, rural writers and urban writers, representing four generations of menstruators: writers who call down their bloodiest muses. *Edited by Rosanna Deerchild, Ariel Gordon and Tanis MacDonald* [Purchase](https://www.frontenachouse.com/product/gush-menstrual-manifestos-for-our-times/?ref=reimerwrites.com) --- ### MODERN LOSS: Candid Conversation About Grief. Beginners Welcome **I contributed the essay “Deathday Birthday.”** Let’s face it: most of us can’t handle talking about death. We’re awkward and uncertain; we blurt out platitudes or say nothing at all; we send sympathy bouquets whittled out of fruit. Enter Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner, who can help us do better. *MODERN LOSS* grew out of Rebecca and Gabi’s experiences with sudden loss as young adults — when Rebecca’s mother was killed in a car accident and her dad died of a heart attack. Gabi’s father and step-mother were brutally murdered in a home invasion. Both women bonded over their pain and search for resources that spoke to them — ones that were not too clinical, patronizing or, well, cheesy. They didn’t want to be assured their loved ones were “in a better place” and had no interest in chicken soup metaphors in book form, thank you very much. In this wise and often funny book, Soffer and Birkner, along with more than forty contributors, share their provocative stories on themes including sex and intimacy after loss, technology, and the secrets we harbor and uncover. Accompanied by beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and witty “how to” cartoons by artist [Peter Arkle](https://www.peterarkle.com/?ref=reimerwrites.com), each contribution provides a unique perspective on loss as well as a remarkable life-affirming message: You’re not broken, life will go on, and it can actually be pretty rewarding. There’s also a glossary of terms that therapists probably don’t use but most of us should. (Looking at you, “sadbooking.”) *Edited by Rebecca Soffer and Gabrielle Birkner.* [Purchase](https://www.harpercollins.com/products/modern-loss-rebecca-soffergabrielle-birkner?variant=40999932559394&ref=reimerwrites.com) ### Hybrid artworks URL: https://www.reimerwrites.com/hybrid-artworks/ Last updated: 2026-07-23T22:16:18.000Z My practice spans creative disciplines, incorporating hybrid modes of creation, production and performance. GRIEFWAVE is an elegiac response to the life and death of my brother, Chris Reimer (1986-2012), a Calgary-based indie musician. It is also a meditation on the oscillating nature of loss and grief, and the ways in which mourning changes when it takes place in public, digital spheres. Portions of this digital elegy-in-progress have appeared on a self-hosted website and were modified to appear on a digital billboard over Macleod Trail in Calgary as part of Wordfest, 2013. Thanks to support from The Canada Council for the Arts, and support from patrons. #### shrine to extended possibilities (installation) In our grief work, we came to understand that our brothers remain present in our lives. We consider the moments in which they continue to walk with us, and we note how their gentle suggestions for how to live continue to be spoken. **Shrine to extended possibilities* maps the material objects that represent a spiritual presence/present and considers that a brother-sister bond might remain unbroken beyond death. It invites viewers to consider how their own loved ones’ messages might continue to resonate. 2018 [Equinox Vigil](http://www.equinoxvigil.ca/?ref=reimerwrites.com) #### tender tender tender (collage poem) ***tender tender tender,** ****2016\.** 3 x 3 x 0.1875 inches, poem and photograph collage on foamcore.
